Diwali crackers lead to 30% rise in cough, cold cases

Thane: The air in Thane is full of pollutants and is leaving people coughing and sneezing all the time. As a precaution, parents should ensure to cover their kids nose and mouth while stepping out in cold. From newborn babies till the age of five, kids are most affected and complain of running nose, wheezing etc.

Aliments like sore throat, cold and respiratory tract infections are on the rise, all thanks to the increase in the pollutants in the air, claimed the city-based doctors.It is learnt that there has been an increase of around 30 percent in the number of patients suffering from cold, cough, sore throat etc. due to the rise of dust particles in the air because of the cool climate in the evenings. The doctors stated that the patients are complaining about body ache and viral fever.“There had been a rise in the number of patients post Diwali as the pollutants emitted due to the crackers are directly inhaled by people and even the change in climate has an effect. Most of the people who are coming in are facing respiratory tract infections and if it persists then it might lead to asthma and bronchitis. Also, the ones who are asthmatic are usually the ones who first get affected in such an atmosphere and their condition gets aggravated,” said Dr Rahul Kulkarni, ENT specialist.Not only adults but many children including infants are also suffering from upper respiratory tract infections which has not only led to cold but even cough, wheezing and in some cases has affected lower respiratory tract.“Children get affected easily as their immune system is weak, so when the signs of flu are seen they should immediately be taken to a doctor so that the respiratory infection does on aggravate. From newborn babies till the age of five, kids are most affected and complain of running nose, wheezing etc. As a precaution, parents should ensure to cover their kids nose and mouth while stepping out in cold. Avoid sudden exposure to cold, from a heated room to the cold outdoors, especially in the evening and morning, as it may trigger spasms and irritation of the lungs which interferes with the normal breathing,” said Dr Anand Bedekar, paediatrician.There had been a rise in the number of patients post Diwali as the pollutants emitted due to the crackers are directly inhaled by people.
