MUV driver mows down four persons on Mumbai-Nashik highway

The victims were waiting by the road for buses and private vehicles to reach their destinations when the driver lost control of the MUV. The driver was ferrying his Navi Mumbai-based employer and owner of the car, Jayant Narekar (56), to Nashik when the accident took place. Locals rushed to the spot and rushed the victims to Shahapur Gramin Hospital even before the police arrived. Patole’s relative said he was the first to be mowed down.A case of negligence causing death and rash driving has been registered against the driver.

Kalyan: Four people were killed, including a minor boy, and four others were injured after the driver of a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) rammed the car into them while they were standing near a bridge in Shahapur on Mumbai-Nashik highway early on Saturday. The victims were waiting by the road for buses and private vehicles to reach their destinations when the driver lost control of the MUV. The driver was ferrying his Navi Mumbai-based employer and owner of the car, Jayant Narekar (56), to Nashik when the accident took place. Soon after the mishap, he fled the spot.The deceased have been identified as Aaditya Navgire (16), Abdullah Gani Shaikh (55), Daulat Davne (36) and Shreeram Patole (45). Aaditya’s mother Pooja (38), sister Vidya (13), Narekar and his aunt Chhaya Lokhande (40) were injured in the accident. While Narekar, who is said to have sustained serious injuries and fractures, was shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane, the other three are admitted to Shahapur Gramin Hospital.The police said that the MUV was in such a high speed that when it rammed into the seven bystanders, four of them were thrown into a nearby trench. The car too followed. Locals rushed to the spot and rushed the victims to Shahapur Gramin Hospital even before the police arrived. Patole, Davne, and Aaditya were declared brought dead while Shaikh died at the hospital.The police said Aaditya, his mother and sister, who reside in Nashik, had come to their aunt Chhaya’s house in Shahapur for Diwali vacation. On Saturday, the Navgire family was to leave for their house and Chhaya had come to see them off.One of the other deceased, Shaikh, was a resident of Bhiwandi, and was on his way to Mokhada to attend a family function, said the police. “He was waiting for transport from the highway to reach up to Kasara so that he could take head to Mokhada from there in another vehicle. He is survived by his wife and two sons,” said an officer.Patole, who used to sell vegetables in Kinhavali on Shahapur-Murbad road, was waiting to go to Nashik to buy vegetables and was waiting for a tempo. Patole’s relative said he was the first to be mowed down.A case of negligence causing death and rash driving has been registered against the driver. Police said once Narekar is stable, they will enquire with him about the driver’s details.
