Mumbai: Nearly four months after a jewellery showroom staffer allegedly stole two diamond-studded rings—one of 1.25 carat, the other of 0.90 carat—totally worth Rs 12.95 lakh, he was arrested recently. The police said that the staffer, Rinku Gopal Soni (32), who had quit soon after the crime, gave himself away by constantly inquiring with a colleague about any police inquiry into the theft case.Soni used to work for a franchise store of Tanishq at Nariman Point . In October, its franchisee, Anjit Arenja, lodged a complaint that two diamond-studded rings , which were sent for repairs, were found to be fake.Rinku told the police he informed the store owner that some diamonds had fallen off while being shown to customers. These were sent for repairs at that time, but a recent report certified these to be fakes. “Soni is yet to reveal how he smuggled out the genuine stones. We suspected this to be an inside job as the store is in a highly secure place,” said the officer. “His WhatsApp chats with the colleague gave him away.” —S Ahmed Ali
