Fed up of next-door cat straying into his flat, Thane man hurls it to death from 16th floor

THANE: Fed up of the "nuisance" caused by a neighbour's pet feline, a Thane resident allegedly flung the Persian cat to its death from the 16th floor of his building on Friday. "The maid requested Panchal not to harm the cat," said senior inspector Datta Dhole of Kasarwadavali police station. The man, Shivram Panchal (64) claimed that the cat often sneaked into his flat and he feared for the safety of a baby in his house. "She even tried to stop him, but Panchal was in no mood to listen and just dropped the cat. Later, when it was taken upstairs to Shaikh's flat, his other pets -eight other Persian cats and a Labrador-kept circling around the dead feline.

He was arrested and released on bail.The death of the one-year-old furry feline, Sonu, has caused much grief to the family of its master, Gani Shaikh (65), who lives in Everest Countryside Complex in Kasarwadavli The cat's carcass was found on the ground caked in blood. Later, when it was taken upstairs to Shaikh's flat, his other pets -eight other Persian cats and a Labrador-kept circling around the dead feline. The cats kept mewing incessantly, refusing to move away from their dead companion, said a neighbour of the Shaikh family.The police said that a domestic help of a neighbour, Lalita Gaikwad, sensed trouble when she saw Panchal storm out of his flat and walk towards an open gap, holding Sonu who was struggling to set itself free. "The maid requested Panchal not to harm the cat," said senior inspector Datta Dhole of Kasarwadavali police station. "She even tried to stop him, but Panchal was in no mood to listen and just dropped the cat."Shaikh alleged that Panchal often picked up fights with his family due to the pets they kept. He said he had rescued Sonu more than a year ago from an eatery along the Mumbra highway where it had been tethered."It was in a critical condition and so I requested the restaurant owner to let me adopt it," Gani said. "I got Sonu home and treated him. Sonu soon became a part of our family."
