It has over 1,300 patients, plus 300 patients visit the outpatient department (OPD). Ideally, there should be one doctor for every 100 patients, but over 200 patients were being treated by one doctor. Out of the 18 posts for doctors, the hospital has 16; the two vacant posts are of a doctor who is on childcare leave, and another who is absconding.“The state health department has now given us four doctors on contract basis; one is a psychiatrist, one an anaesthetist and two are medical officers. This has taken away the burden that was on doctors here. Even doctors who were on leave were told to resume work, and even those deputed to other hospitals were called back to work at the hospital. So, now we have 16 doctors, including six psychiatrists, and this has taken away the burden on doctors who were working earlier, as the patients are now distributed and work is balanced,” said Dr Sanjay Bodade, superintendent of Thane mental hospital.
