Thane: Livid at six-month jail, thief hurls slipper at judge

BHIWANDI: A man accused in several theft cases hurled a slipper at a judge in the Bhiwandi court on Wednesday. Police inspector of Shanti Nagar police station, Durgesh Dubey, said that no sooner had the judge pronounced his judgment than Ansari lost his cool and flung his footwear at the judge. The man, Ashraf Ansari, a Bhiwandi resident, was livid after the judge, a judicial magistrate first class, H J Pathan, sentenced him to six months in jail and also imposed a fine in one of the theft cases. Ansari has already spent 14 months behind bars in the other cases.Following the attack on the judge, lawyers went on a strike, demanding proper security for judges and advocates. He did not get hurt," said Dubey.After the incident, police personnel immediately took Ansari to the police station where he was arrested and booked under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code which deals with 'assault on a public servant' besides section 228 (causing intentional insult to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding).
