Had complained of cracks: Resident of ill-fated Ulhasnagar building

ULHASNAGAR: The first-floor resident of Ulhasnagar 's Memsahab building where a slab collapse killed three people, including a toddler, had complained about cracks in the ceiling due to work on the floor above.The second-floor slab caved in on Sunday and came crashing down on a clinic on the ground floor. We will check if the Motwani family had undertaken work illegally. The three deceased had been waiting at the clinic to see the doctor.The resident, Bhavesh Nagdev, whose flat was also damaged, said he had complained to the Motwani family that owns the second-floor flat. "Karan Maurya, Anita's brother, said, "My sister had gone to the dcotor's clinic as Priya was unwell and for Vandana's check-up."

Nagdev said, "My family was lucky as we were in another room. We had raised objections earlier." Members of the Motwani family are on the run, said a source."My mother and aunt were in the other room while my father and elder brother were not home. I was out with friends when the accident took place, said Nagdev.Yuvraj Badane, chief public relations officer of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation , said, "The police will file an FIR against those who are guilty. We will check if the Motwani family had undertaken work illegally."Karan Maurya, Anita's brother, said, "My sister had gone to the dcotor's clinic as Priya was unwell and for Vandana's check-up." Vandana's husband Ramesh said, "My wife has been told to undergo an X-ray to check if the foetus is fine."Relatives and families of the deceased have demanded action against those responsible for the incident. Aslam Khatib, assistant police inspector at Central police station said, "We are recording statements of the injured and action will be taken according to our preliminary investigation."The civic body has asked all buildings constructed during 1994-1995 to conduct structural audits.
