Thane jail women brushing up on spoken English to prep for jobs

When they go through the spoken English programme, they find a completely different environment from what they are used to. After strengthening core spoken English, the learners will be trained in using English in customer service scenarios. MUMBAI: For two hours every afternoon, 20 women inmates of Thane prison are transported to another world, where they converse in English and strut around confidently. These women are being groomed to improve their chances at finding jobs in the customer service sector once released.This is the first time a certified course in spoken English has been introduced for women in prisons in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region . “If it takes off well in the Thane prison, Prayas will attempt to replicate the programme for women inmates in Byculla and Kalyan prison,” said Aruna Nimse, a social worker.The course at Thane prison has four modules.
