THANE: The crucial Metro 4 and 4A project connecting Mumbai with Thane and its suburbs moved a step ahead after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) appointed contractors for depot construction at Mogharpada, Ghodbunder Road, along with laying of tracks on the route between Mulund and Thane, officials said on Tuesday. The works on Metro 4 and 4A projects are progressing well, and a delay in finalising the car shed had raised fears that the projects completion schedule would be affected. The state cabinet had earlier this month, approved 170Ha of government land at Mogharpada of which around 42.2Ha will be used for constructing car sheds for metro lines.Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said the Rs 905-crore bid by SEW-VSE (JV) L1 was selected as it was the lowest. The depot will have 64 stabling lines (32 for present and rest as future provision) 10 inspection bay lines and workshop lines each, in addition to an operational control centre, administrative building, maintenance and workshop building, auxiliary substation, staff quarters, among others.Officials said that Apurvakriti Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. had been appointed for laying a ballastless railway track at a cost of Rs 121 crore to connect Mulund fire station with the Gaimukh metro station and Mogharpada depot on Metro 4 route. The Mumbai Metro Routes 4 and 4A are vital transportation links connecting two major cities in the Metropolitan Region, and significant progress is being made in the construction of these lines. We are working towards ensuring the project is made operational for the public at the earliest, said Mukherjee. While the civil work on the 32km-long Kasarvadavali-Wadala Metro 4 route has progressed to 58%, that on the 2.7km 4A line connecting Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh is 61% complete, officials said.
