KALYAN: Union minister Kapil Patil on Sunday blamed bad contractors for poor quality work, especially poor quality roads, in Thane district, the home turf of chief minister Eknath Shinde. Under the cleanliness campaign by the central government, various drives were organised by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation at more than 50 places on Sunday. Patil participated in the campaign along with his supporters and cleaned garbage from the road. During his interaction with journalists, when asked about the problem of potholes in the city, Patil said filling of potholes is a continuous process. "When a road is built, it has a life. I dont support potholes. It is a fact that citizens are troubled by potholes. But potholes cannot be filled during rains," he said, clarifying that he wasnt trying to save the municipal officials. "The municipal corporation should build the kind of roads that do not get potholes easily," he added. Patil, however, said that it is also the reponsibility of citizens to keep a close watch on ongoing road works so as to build a pressure on the administration to deliver quality work. "I dont understand why Thane district is cursed. This district does not get any good contractors easily," he said, adding that many times, contractors leave work midway while some others take six years to complete six months of work or do not deliver quality work.
