THANE: An African proverb says, 'When the music changes, so does the dance .'Though the proverb hints at how it is important to adapt to change in life, on the occasion of World Dance Day today, the proverb aptly suits the evolution of dance in recent times.Dance enthusiasts from the city talk about how the variety of dance styles in today's times will have one swinging from one option to another.Simrin Vijaykar, co-founder of a dance community in Thane, said, "In earlier times, people stuck around for at least six months to thoroughly learn a dance style . But today, given the fast paced life and hectic schedule, people want quick results. If they think they aren't performing well, they quit and join a class that teaches them another dance form. That is when the concept of a three-day boot camp or workshop comes into the picture. Such methods of training is not only beneficial to instructors but students as well, who do not have much time in hand but are eager to learn."Vijaykar added that people want to try something new and experiment the influence of western culture and the desire to look glamorous on their social media profile.Varsha Agnihotri of a city-based music and dance training institute, said, "A lot of youngsters come to class with an intent of imitate certain dance moves they see in films and shows. Earlier, disco was a popular form of dance, but today it's all about hip-hop and jive. Increase in the exposure to reality shows has attracted a huge crowd of students to new dance forms."Also, ball room dancing is something that is catching the interest of people in the city."I go to parties all the time in clubs. Since I was the only boy in my group who had two left feet, I started learning dance by going through tutorials on YouTube. Later, I became very interested in it and now I am thinking of pursuing it further," said 22-year-old Ketan Shah from Thane.The concept of a three-day boot camp or workshop is picking up. People want quick results and jump from one dance form to another to master it. Such training methods, said dance enthusiasts, are beneficial for instructors as well
