Navi Mumbai: There has been a dip in the number of deaths in road accidents in the first five months of this year compared to the corresponding period last year.Better vigil and pre-emptive checks aimed at instilling road discipline among motorists have led to fewer road deaths , traffic department officials said.There have been 42 less deaths in road accidents this year. There has been a dip in the number of injured too."Yes, it's some relief and I did oversee management of the staff during different hours of traffic to increase police presence on the roads," DCP (traffic) Nitin Pawar said. The focus was on pre-emptive strikes to caution motorists. "My focus was on taking action against various violations like talking on the mobile while driving, not wearing helmets or seat belt or breaking zebra crossing rules."In a slight cause for worry, the difference in the number of deaths went up by 2 to 44 in May.The traffic department has now shifted its focus on being monsoon-ready to maintain its good record.
