Bohri community to celebrate Eid with great fervour today

""The Bohra community observes the lunar calendar which is based upon the position of the moon and its cycle whereas the Shia and Sunni community follow the Hijri calendar. the custom of giving money to small children and is an essential part of the festival.

Thane: The holy month of Ramzan is all about fasting and feasting for the people of Muslim community. For some communities, Roza ended on Saturday after the sighting of the moon and Eid will be celebrated today. Whereas for those belonging to other Islamic sects, Roza will end on completion of the 30 day-period depending on the moon sighting as per the calendar they follow. For them, Eid would be celebrated tomorrow.However, the Bohri community, who follow the Shia tradition celebrated the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr today with great festive fervor. Relishing the widespread array of cuisines, reading the Quran, performing the early morning Namaz and listening to the sermons conducted by religious scholars characterizes the typical routine of a Muslim on this day.Sixty nine-year-old Bashir Bape, a Rabodi resident said, "My entire family wakes up before dawn and visits the Dargah for Eid ki Namaz at 7.30 am. While returning home, we invite all our friends and relatives to indulge in the traditional sweet delicacies such as Sevaiya and Gajar ka Halwa.""The Bohra community observes the lunar calendar which is based upon the position of the moon and its cycle whereas the Shia and Sunni community follow the Hijri calendar. As per the lunar calendar some people's Roza ended yesterday. The month of Shawwal is extremely significant to all Muslims as the first day of this month marks the festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr which essentially refers to the festival of breaking the fast. Along with this community in India, even the Muslims in Saudi Arabia celebrate Eid" said Wasim Shaikh from Kalwa.Since this month is all about performing good deeds, generosity and giving as much to the society, respect and appreciation for one another is seen in the community. The last two days of Ramzan in particular is believed to be the most crucial as it is considered to be an auspicious time to pray for the wellbeing of others. The custom of Eidi is one which holds significance in all Muslim families this time of the year.Sajid Khakiyani, a Thaneite said, "Eidi i.e. the custom of giving money to small children and is an essential part of the festival. Eidi is also given to the less unfortunate ones."
