A ‘dam’ good start: Level swells in catchment areas after 3-day rain

"Residents can be rest assured of a normal supply this season as the rainfall has been comapritevely better this year till now. The water from these reservoirs is used after the monsoon period ends and a good rainfall in the catchment area is essential for the dam volume to increase.The heavy rains in the catchment areas of the dams increased the level of water considerably this year as compared to last, said officials. "The dams have to be filled to their full capacity by August end so that there is adequate water to suffice the needs of the district till the next monsoon arrives. The biggest gain was for Bhatsa dam that saw around 220mm rainfall over the last three days that considerably increased the volume of the reservoir from 315million cubic metres to 349mcm recording an addition of nearly 35mcm quantity.

Thane: Many areas in Thane were flooded due to the rains that hit the city over the weekend inconviniencing many people, but the heavy showers has largely helped fill nearly 48 days of water requirement of the district in the dams that supply water to the city.As many as 50 million cubic metres of water or roughly around 50,000 million litres water was added collectively in the three reservoirs - Bhatsa, Andra and Barvi- that majorly supply the commodity to various urban and rural parts of the district. The Barvi dam also saw an increase of quantity from 64mcm to 71.5mcm in the same period with 121mm rains while Andra received 142mm showers to add another 7mcm taking its volume to 61.6mcm over the last three days.Irrigation officials monitoring the capacity of the reservoirs said the good showers has added considerable volume to the dams, but said the monsoon needs to be consistent over the next two months so as to achieve a satisfactory level. "The dams have to be filled to their full capacity by August end so that there is adequate water to suffice the needs of the district till the next monsoon arrives. The levels this year have been good as compared to last year," said an official.Meanwhile, Thane residents have been spared the weekly cuts after the water levels in the basin of Ulhas river had risen to satisfactory levels."Residents can be rest assured of a normal supply this season as the rainfall has been comapritevely better this year till now. ," said a civic officer.
