Woman arrested for duping a man of Rs 8 lakh, held while trying to con another

Thane: A 39-year-old woman has been arrested by Wagle estate police, allegedly for cheating a man to the tune of Rs 8 lakh after luring him in investing into the "lucrative" business of sale of costly tea to plush hotels.The alleged—Monali Hazarika, 38 is native of Dibugarh in Assam who parted with the sum. The police said that the woman made use of fabricated letter heads and purchase orders of the star hotels to cheat her victims.The officer added that it was four months back, that the victim visited the Inorbit Mall in Mumbai where the alleged accused was selling Assam Tea. "He was given the taste of the tea and later the lady developed friendship with him in social media," said a official. Within a few days she informed him that she had acquired a big order for supply of the Assam Tea from star hotels and to make this supply she needs finance."She sought a sum of Rs, 10 lakhs from the victim and also informed him that from the supply of the costly Assam tea she would get double the amount and he would be given his share from the money so got," said the officer.At that time the alleged accused copies of the orders from star hotels and also gave him advance cheques for Rs. 6.45 lakhs to make him belive that the deal was real one, the officer informed. It was in the second week of October,2017 when the victim deposited the cheque in the bank it got dishonoured and when he visited her temporary residence at Malad in Mumbai he was informed that she had already left the place.The victim further stated in his complaint that later when he searched in Google for her name to his utter shock he came to know that the lady had in a similar fashion duped several persons in the same fashion in Assam, Delhi and Mumbai, the police said. In the intervening period when the victim could not trace her he tried her on the whatsapp and she gave all kinds of evasive replies for not being able to arrange for funds for payment.She also formed a whatsapp group and added 17 persons including the victim and announced a bike tour Norway and sought contribution from them. Taking a cue from the group the victim traced one of the members in the group, and to trap her offered to help her in the Tea business. Once again she contacted him not realising what was in store and again cooked up an order for Rs. 15 lakhs and sought financial assistance from him.The victim did not realise it was a trap in Thane for her and simply walked into it and was arrested by the police during her deal at Louis Wadi in the city on November 16, said the police officer. The police officer said that the police were now trying to find out as to how many more persons and to what extent she has duped in a similar manner. A case has been registered at Wagle estate police stationunder sections 420,467, 468 and 471 of the IPC and also section 66(d) of the IT Act
