more-in The State government will act tough against acts of intolerance and possible retaliations that are reported from any part of the State, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. Inaugurating the ‘National Youth Concord 2018,’ a year-long campaign organised by the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan said the country was passing through a climate of intolerance wherein those expressing diverse opinions were being attacked by organised groups. “Instead of raising divergent views, such sections aimed at annihilating those who raised voices of dissent. Communal elements sought to restrict creative freedom to further their own ends. Arts, culture, science and literature will cease to flourish if such forces had the last word,” he warned. Mr. Vijayan also said the State, which safeguarded the citizens’ democratic rights, was in the vanguard of movements that stood for protecting the freedom that have been guaranteed by the Constitution. “Several artists and socio-cultural activists of national and international repute have vouched for his aspect. Movements that take shape in Kerala to preserve opinion formation and counter acts of intolerance are gaining much relevance. In this context, campaigns such as the Youth Concord had great importance,” he added. Launching the logo of the campaign, Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said the State’s courageous resistance against attempts to dictate terms to the public and constrict liberties had come in for much praise globally. K. Muraleedharan, MLA, who presided over the function, said those who criticised others for their opinions had the moral responsibility to accept criticisms. The freedom of expression could be fully realised only when each citizen could exercise the right fearlessly, he added. Kerala State Youth Welfare Board vice-chairman P. Biju, National Youth Concord coordinator G. Ajith Kumar, filmmaker Vidhu Vincent, and youth coordinator A.M. Ansary also spoke on the occasion. Among those who were present included State Youth Commission chairperson Chintha Jerome, National Folk Festival of Kerala programme coordinator Karamana Hari and Youth Welfare Board members Santhosh Kala, V.P.
