more-in Day-care homes for the elderly should provide a good homely, family environment for senior citizens, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said. Inaugurating the new day-care home for the elderly constructed by the Neyyattinkara municipality here on Monday, Ms. Shylaja said such homes should be constructed scientifically. They should be places where the elderly feel happy, cared for and at home, she added. Ms. Shylaja also inaugurated model multi-care homes being launched in all 14 districts under the Saayamprabha scheme. The government is organising a host of welfare schemes for the marginalised sections such as the elderly, transgenders, and the differently abled. The elderly constitutes nearly 13% of the State’s population and their concerns deserve special care, she added. Saayamprabha is a welfare scheme launched by the Social Justice Department for the welfare of the elderly, most of whom are socially isolated, unsafe, and not cared for by families. First in capital Modern facilities are being envisaged in these homes to suit the health and social standards of the times. The scheme is being piloted in Thiruvananthapuram district. The care home at Neyyattinkara, in 2,500 sq ft, has been constructed with the assistance of Helpage India.
