Heavy rains to continue till Saturday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Monsoon-related mishaps, including landslides, flash floods and debris flow, have claimed 60 lives in Kerala till Sunday. “Strong winds from westerly direction, with speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph, are expected. Damage to houses and crop loss is pegged at over Rs 90 crore.In the past 24 hours, no causality has been reported. In the past 24 hours, Irikkur and Taliparamba in Kannur and Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district reported maximum rainfall (4cm), followed by Koilandy in Kozhikode and Kodungallur in Thrissur (3cm). Now, 62 relief camps are functioning across the state, majority in Kozhikode and Alappuzha .

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Monsoon-related mishaps, including landslides, flash floods and debris flow, have claimed 60 lives in Kerala till Sunday. Alert has been issued to coastal communities as heavy rains are expected to lash parts of the state till June 23, with strong winds gusting to 55kmph and high waves of over 10 feet.Damage to infrastructure and uprooting of trees in many places, mostly in hilly terrains, have affected vehicular movement. Damage to houses and crop loss is pegged at over Rs 90 crore.In the past 24 hours, no causality has been reported. Now, 62 relief camps are functioning across the state, majority in Kozhikode and Alappuzha . In all, 15,141 members belonging to 3,540 families have been accommodated in the relief camps, said officials of Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).“Rain havoc has left 256 houses fully damaged and 7,140 houses partially damaged, incurring an estimated loss of Rs 13.67 crore,” officials said.India Meteorological Department (IMD) director K Santosh said heavy rains in the range of 7 to 11 cm were likely in parts of Kerala. “Strong winds from westerly direction, with speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph, are expected. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea,” he said. In the past 24 hours, Irikkur and Taliparamba in Kannur and Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district reported maximum rainfall (4cm), followed by Koilandy in Kozhikode and Kodungallur in Thrissur (3cm).
