Kerala engineering entrance toppers set to join IIT

His mother Shyla Abraham is a professor of the Malayalam department of Baselius College, Kottayam. Though he secured third in the state rank list, he wants to pursue mechanical engineering from IITMadras. Denin had secured fourth rank in the Cusat entrance.

KOTTAYAM/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amal Mathew , the topper of the state engineering entrance examination, is in awe of the world of physics. The 18-year-old is trying to come to terms with its vastness. But one thing is sure, he has decided to have a lifelong affair with the subject.“I have seen only very little of the subject. I need to see more before I think about serious research,” he said from his home in Kuruppunthara in Kottayam district. Though he has secured the top honours in the entrance exam, Amal who got selected to the IIT will be opting its Mumbai campus and wants to study engineering physics, an amalgam of physics, mathematics and electrical engineering.“I am keenly waiting to hold further discussions on the subject with the faculty there. After that I will be more specific and fix my goals,” he said. Amal had also secured top honours in the Cusat entrance.Amal had studied in the CBSE stream till Class X in Oman, where his father Mathew Joseph is working as a college lecturer. With eyes set on joining a reputed institute in India for Engineering, Amal joined Kuriakose Elias School, Mannanam near Kottayam. He switched over to the Kerala syllabus for his Plus Two and secured 98.75% marks in the final exam.“I used to spend three to four hours for studies after class,” said Amal who sacrificed his love for cricket for exam preparation. His other hobbies are reading fiction and playing keyboard.Sabari Krishna, a 17-year-old from Anchallumoodu, Kollam, who bagged the second rank is the son of Madhu G Unnithan, head clerk, Kerala Water Authority, Varkala and Swapna S, manager of SBI, Chavara.“I was excited when I came to know that students who bagged first, third and fifth ranks are my classmates. I want to study mechanical engineering since my favourite subjects are physics and maths,” said Sabari Krishnan.Sabari, who scored 98% in Plus Two board exams, has qualified the JEE Advanced Entrance Examination and would join mechanical engineering at IIT-Madras.Denin Jose is not sad that he came behind his classmates Amal and Sabari in the rank list. The 18-year-old from Caritas near Kottayam had nursed a dream of studying in an IIT. Though he secured third in the state rank list, he wants to pursue mechanical engineering from IITMadras. The youngster who loves mobile games and electronic music is in no hurry to decide on his future plans. "First let me join the IIT. Will decide about my future plans as and when the time comes,” he said.Denin too did his Plus Two in Kerala syllabus. His father Dr Jose Kurien is an associate professor of the pharmacy department of Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. His mother Shyla Abraham is a professor of the Malayalam department of Baselius College, Kottayam. His elder brother Jemin Jose is doing his first year in Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. Denin had secured fourth rank in the Cusat entrance.
