more-in From next week, the police will discourage free on-street parking in the city. Commissioner of Police P. Prakash said vehicles parked for weeks and months at a stretch along roads would be treated as abandoned and towed away. He said derelict vehicles were the leading cause of traffic jams along the congested Paruthikuzhy-Eenchakkal-Chakka stretch. He said the police faced the same problem along the Karamana-Bund Road and Pattom-Plamoodu, and Statue-General Hospital roads. Residents who lacked garage space often parked their cars on the road, impeding the free movement of traffic. Some citizens dispensed with their old cars by parking them on the public highway while they kept their new flashy vehicles safe inside the garage. Some workshop owners also parked old cars on the road. So did residents of high-rise apartments and flat complexes who had only limited parking space. Haphazard parking has worsened the city’s traffic woes. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic has increased significantly with educational institutions reopening for the new academic year. The number of vehicles in the city has grown exponentially over the years with no corresponding enhancement of road space. The police said the confiscated vehicles would be parked at the law enforcement’s vehicle yard at Milk Colony near Poonthura. The owners could get their cars released after going through a due process, including payment of a sizeable fine.
