“The decision to recommend crime branch investigation against the former VC would not stand the scrutiny of law. The former VC had sought action against some of the syndicate members, during their term in regular syndicate. Since the person accused for violating secrecy is no more associated with the varsity, the syndicate can seek police investigation. Its only objective is to malign him,” Johnson Abraham said. However, many in the academic circles believe that allegations against the former VC were of serious nature. The university is not competent to conduct inquiry into such matters,” said R Jayaprakash, former member, Kerala state higher education council.

Thiruvananthapuram: The decision of Kerala University syndicate to recommend crime branch investigation against the varsity’s former vice-chancellor P K Radhakrishnan has evoked mixed reactions in academic and administrative circles. The varsity’s nominated syndicate, on Wednesday, decided to seek crime branch investigation against the former VC on a complaint that he had leaked information from the varsity examination section and publicized classified data on a publication. He was accused of smuggling files relating to the evaluation of LLB examination answer papers in connivance with some officials in the varsity, soon after he demitted the office a few months ago.“The nominated syndicate’s decision to drag the former VC into a criminal case is highly deplorable and is laden with personal vendetta against him,” said former syndicate member Johnson Abraham. The former VC had sought action against some of the syndicate members, during their term in regular syndicate. He had also questioned the rationale behind the selection of some persons the state government has nominated to the ad hoc syndicate. “The decision to recommend crime branch investigation against the former VC would not stand the scrutiny of law. Its only objective is to malign him,” Johnson Abraham said. However, many in the academic circles believe that allegations against the former VC were of serious nature. He was accused of disclosing the name of a teacher who re-valuated the LLB examination answer papers of a group of students who were allegedly victimized by teachers of Government Law College.“Publicising the name of the evaluator is a serious breach of official secrecy. Since the person accused for violating secrecy is no more associated with the varsity, the syndicate can seek police investigation. The university is not competent to conduct inquiry into such matters,” said R Jayaprakash, former member, Kerala state higher education council.
