Racing bikers kill woman: Witnesses

Thiruvananthapuram: A 45-year-old woman was killed after she was knocked down by a speeding motorbike, which was involved in an alleged road race , near Ambalamukku on Thursday afternoon. Shalini’s condition was reportedly better compared to the other injured, the police officials said.The motorcycle that caused the accident was a Pulsar 200 CC. Residents said that there were three motorcycles that were moving at high speed. Eyewitnesses said that Jyothilakshmi was tossed off in the air in the impact of collision and fell hard on the tarmac, injuring her head severely.

Jyothilakshmi (45) of TC 21/1365(2), Nedumcaud is the deceased.Two other women, who were crossing the road along with Jyothilekshmi, as well the two youths riding on the motorcycle, too suffered serious injuries in the accident.The people in the locality alleged that the accident was caused due to mindless racing by the youths. Residents said that there were three motorcycles that were moving at high speed. The accident spot was on a curve and the youths could not have seen the women stepping on the road, leading to the accident.According to the police, the accident occurred around 1pm. Jyothilakshmi was crossing the road along with two other women, Thulasi (52) and Shalini (38) also hailing from Nedumcaud. Eyewitnesses said that Jyothilakshmi was tossed off in the air in the impact of collision and fell hard on the tarmac, injuring her head severely. There were injuries all over her body, the police said.The police said that Jyothilakshmi was part of a group of over 20 women, who had arrived at Ambalamukku on different autorickshaws. They were all members of a neighbourhood group under Kudumbashree. They were crossing the road to go to a bank located on the opposite side of the road when the motorcycle that was going from Ambalamukku to Kowdiar direction rammed them.The three women were immediately rushed to the medical college hospital. Jyothilakshmi succumbed to her injuries around 3.30pm, while under treatment in intensive care unit.Thulasi has suffered serious injuries on her legs and had to undergo emergency surgery. Shalini’s condition was reportedly better compared to the other injured, the police officials said.The motorcycle that caused the accident was a Pulsar 200 CC. It belonged to 21-year-old Anand, who was riding it. His friend Sanwar was riding pillion. They were admitted to KIMS Hospital at Venpalavattom. A case will be registered against them invoking section 304A of IPC that pertains to causing death by negligence.Jyothilakshmi is the sixth pedestrian to lose life on the road in the past two months in the city. She is the wife of Suresh, a daily-wage labourer. She also leaves behind two sons, Shravan (20) and Shruthin (14).Traffic circle inspector (North) Dileep Kumar Das, said that they have not received any evidence so far suggesting that the accident was caused due to racing.“There are no surveillance cameras on the road here and we are collecting visuals from shops and establishments nearby to probe into the allegation by residents that the accident resulted from racing,” the CI said.
