Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC has decided to drop the idea of observing Ramayana month with its own leaders coming out against the plan. KPCC president M M Hassan has urged KPCC Vichar Vibhag to cancel the programmes planned in connection with Ramayana month. The official inauguration of a slew of programmes to observe Ramayana month was scheduled in the city on July 17, the first day of Karkkadakam month. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala was supposed to inaugurate the event.Vichar Vibhag had justified the campaign by saying that what they intended to do was to promote the concept of ‘Rama Rajyam’ as suggested by Mahatma Gandhi as a model form of governance. However, a section of Congress leaders has found the move as ill-advised. While many leaders who are unhappy chose to remain tight lipped, former KPCC presidents K Muraleedharan and V M Sudheeran openly criticized the decision. “It is not something that the Congress party needs to do. Ours is a secular party where members of different beliefs co-exist. It is the duty of communal organizations to organize religious programmes, not that of a political party. It is what the BJP is practising. We shouldn’t do the same. We need to devise a different strategy to take them on,” Muraleedharan had said.
