Thiruvananthapuram: A dent caused by a fallen coconut and the handiwork of a little boy made sure that Biju, a resident of Karikkakom, got back his stolen bike. Pettah police, who probed the theft tracked down the bike and the thief with the help of these ‘unique identification marks’.The bike, parked near Biju's house, was stolen a week ago and he immediately filed a complaint with Pettah police. “Biju had told us that a few weeks ago, a coconut had fallen on the left side of the fuel tank, leaving a dent and it was slightly deformed. Besides, his little brother had used a whitener to write BIJU in capital letters on the side cover,” said Saju Kumar, Pettah SHO.The police made a list of vehicle-theft related incidents and found that Achushan alias Achu (21), who resides near the colony from where the bike was stolen had a history in vehicle theft. He had also been involved in shady transactions of narcotic substances. The police observed Achushan and found out that he regularly went to an unsuspecting spot where he had parked a bike. The police seized the vehicle. “We looked for these marks Biju had told us about. The name on the side cover was partially erased but the mark on the fuel tank caused by the coconut was very evident,” said Saju Kumar. Achushan was later arrested by a team that comprised SHO Sajukumar, SI Vinod, Chandran, civil police officers Biju, Udayan, Sudheer, Sreekumar and Herbert. He also confessed to the theft.Achushan, who has another bike theft case registered against him, used to steal bikes and resell them at second-hand shops to earn money to buy costly gadgets and this time he had wanted to purchase an iPhone. He had put off the sale after he got to know that police had been talking to vehicle agents following the theft.
