The structure is proposed to be constructed on the Chackai side.“There has been frequent demand from airlines and passengers for additional check-in counters and immigration counters at the international terminal,” said airport director George G Tharakan.“More departure counters were opened recently at the international terminal and there is congestion at the arrival area. As there is no space available to provide more counters and other facilities, we are considering some temporary extensions to meet the immediate need. There is a vacant space available at Chackai which can be utilized for the purpose,” he said.Meanwhile, the airport authority is yet to take a final decision, as the government has assured to allocate the required area for airport development. Though a gazette notification was published with details of land demarcated for the project and list of landowners, the rehabilitation and compensation package is yet to be finalized.“The viability of the structure need to be assessed as it will be a separate building. It will incur huge expense to construct another structure,” he said. “The government has ensured us that the land will be allotted soon. We are eagerly waiting for the land acquisition to begin.
