Construction of berths in Vizhinjam seaport hit

The temporary access used to approach permanent structures got dislodged from the mainland in the high waves that hit the Vizhinjam coast for the last two days. Minister for Ports and Museums, Kadannappally Ramachandran and Mayor V. K. Prasanth, who reached Vizhinjam to attend a CSR function of Adani Group, along with the Managing Director and CEO of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) Jayakumar visited the site on Wednesday evening. The construction of berths has come to a halt. Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Ltd (AVPPL), the private multi-port operator entrusted to build superstructure and operate the seaport, said the workers in the jack-up platform and construction site have been moved to safer place, leaving behind the equipment on the jetty.

The Minister and the Mayor were briefed about the damages by the AVPPL authorities. Official sources said the two jack-up platforms had not suffered any damaged in the monsoon fury. “A small medium bund for medium waves by the contractor would have avoided the damage’, the official added. Ms. AFCONS is the agency entrusted by AVPPL for the construction of the 800 m container berth south of the breakwater and another 500 m fishing berth alongside the breakwater to its north.
