Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city would soon get rid of its tag of ‘a city that goes to sleep early’. The fast food owners in the city have sought the permission of the police to keep their business open overnight and the police are considering this request seriously. The proposal is to extend the functioning of street food joints at least till 2.30am.According to Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithi state vice-president and the patron of Fast Food Owners’ Samithi in the city V Pappachan, there is potential for good business during the night, owing to the presence of the international airport, three railway stations and the KSRTC bus station as well as the tourist bus services operating from Thampanoor and Thycaud areas. Then there is the staff of numerous IT firms in the city, including those in the IT Park at Kazhakkoottam that have late shifts. This is in addition to the long-distance travellers, who pass through the city. With several movie theatres offering late night shows starting around 11 pm, there are customers who will come out for a late supper too.‘’Travellers would always prefer a hot cup of coffee to get rid of that drowsy feeling from long hours of travel,” Pappachan said. Now it would seem like there would be no customers at late nights because there were no shops open during those hours. Once they know that the shops were open, they would come flocking, he said.“The police responded to our request by directing us to improve the security of our establishments,” Pappachan said adding that their members had joined hands with the police department in bringing all fast food outlets under surveillance camera cover as part of stepping up the security.Recently, the police have let street food joints function till 12 midnight. Earlier, the deadline was 11 pm. If the camera surveillance project works as expected, the police may show the green signal for all-night business.City police commissioner P Prakash said that the major reason why the fast food joints were forced to stop business early at night was the miscreant menace. Antisocial elements always liked to hang out near fast food joints. Then there is the issue of extortionists. Having cameras nearby would act as a deterrent to such elements.“As per our plan, the fast food joint owners will have to meet the expense of buying the surveillance gadgets. We will give them expert advice on installing them at strategic locations. We are already in talks with commercial establishments near these food joints to provide power supply,” the commissioner said.City police control room assistant commissioner V Sureshkumar said that the cameras would be installed in such a way that they were beneficial to the residents and other traders in the proximity too. “These days good surveillance cameras are available at prices below Rs 10,000. So fast food joint owners have not made an issue out of having to meet the expenses of purchasing and installation,” the AC said.
