Thiruvananthapuram: With the state capital transforming at a fast pace, the city police have been working on plans to deal with the growing traffic on city roads. A proposal to decentralise the city traffic division functioning at Pattom by trifurcating it – into north, south and central sub-divisions – is on the anvil.“The city is expanding rapidly. The current man power we have will not be sufficient to meet the needs two years down the line,” said city police commissioner P Prakash, adding that the trifurcation was a long-term plan.As per the proposal, the office of city traffic police at Pattom would be retained as the central sub-division. The north sub-division would come up at Kazhakkoottam and the south sub-division at Fort limits, he said. The IT Hub at Kazhakkoottam is growing at a rapid pace, with Technopark Phase III and Technocity campus that are coming up here. In south, Vizhinjam international seaport, a prestigious project of the state government, is expected to throw open a plethora of local business opportunities. Two years down the line, the city would not be the same and the volume of vehicular traffic would be manifold then. The police needed to be ready to face new situations. The proposal was put forward keeping these changes in mind, the commissioner said, adding that the state police chief would peruse the proposal and then send it to the officials concerned in the home department.Recent increase in road accidents also prompted the city police to press for the proposal. The formation of a new sub-division would also mean creating new posts for officers ranging from assistant commissioner to civil police officer.“Even if it is approved, it would take considerable time to implement the proposed changes and that is why we took the first steps this early,” Prakash pointed out.Meanwhile, there are also varied opinions regarding the proposal within the department. Senior officials are also of the opinion that the changing needs could be met with effective deployment of available man power. With the latest cabinet decision shifting responsibility of investigation of accident cases from the traffic police to local police, such a major change in the system may not be necessary, opined a senior IPS officer.
