Short film, docu fete begins today

A total of 64 films have been chosen for competition, under the categories of long documentary, short documentary, short fiction, and campus films. Curtain will go up on the 11th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) here on Friday. Documentary filmmaker Rakesh Sharma will be the chief guest. The Chief Minister will also give away the first Lifetime Achievement Award, introduced by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy that organises the fete, to filmmaker Anand Patwardhan. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the five-day fete at the Kairali cinema at 6 p.m.

Balan will preside. The Chief Minister will also give away the first Lifetime Achievement Award, introduced by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy that organises the fete, to filmmaker Anand Patwardhan. The award carries a cash prize of ?2 lakh and a sculpture. Opening film Following the inaugural, Human Flow, a documentary directed by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei on the global refugee crisis and shot across 23 countries, will be screened. Kavitha Lankesh, member of the jury; Kamal, chairperson, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy; Bina Paul, vice chairperson; Mahesh Panju, secretary; and Rani George, Culture Secretary; will attend the inaugural function. As many as 206 films from 36 countries will be shown under various categories at Kairali, Sree, and Nila cinemas. A total of 64 films have been chosen for competition, under the categories of long documentary, short documentary, short fiction, and campus films. Thirteen music videos and nine animated films have also been included. On Friday, 30 films will be screened, from 9.30 a.m.
