more-in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has launched Wings, the country’s first Internet telephony service, in the State. At a press conference here on Friday, P.T. Mathew, Chief General Manager, BSNL Kerala circle, said the Voice-over Internet Protocol-based service would allow users to call any telephone number in the country through its mobile app Wings. Once the app is installed on Android, Windows, or Apple iOS-based mobile devices, tablets, personal computers, or laptops with Internet service of any operator, calls can be made and received without a SIM card. This is expected to benefit people who have poor mobile connectivity but have Wi-Fi connection. Wings allows users to call any number, on any mobile network, and landlines too. At present, calls can be made through mobile apps only by users of the same app. The service comes with national and international roaming facilities; customers can make calls to India at lower call rates while roaming in other countries. With Wings, unlimited audio and video calls for one year can be made by shelling out a one-time registration charge of ?1,099 at BSNL customer service centres or the website bsnl.co.in. Customers will receive a 10-digit virtual phone number along with the connection through which they can make and receive calls. Wings supports video calling facility from Wings to Wings numbers. BSNL Wings will become available from August 1. On the launch of 4G services by BSNL, Mr. Mathew said the equipment had arrived, and they were waiting for allotment of spectrum by the government. “The spectrum is expected in a couple of months, and we hope to launch by October,” he said. BSNL, he said, was doing well in the State. Despite the revenue dip and losses in the sector, BSNL Kerala had made a profit last year. “Last year, our revenue was ?2,700 crore and profit was ?350 crore. However, falling tariffs are a problem.” New FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) plans such as 777 and 1277 that offer unlimited call and unlimited data at high speeds such as 50 and 100 Mbps and postpaid plans such as 399 offering unlimited calls and data were presented, besides prepaid plan 446 that offered 2 GB data a day along with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS a day.
