All local police stations in Kerala to have cyber units

The cyber complaints reported in the state are probed by either the cyber police station or district cyber cells. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an apparent move to address rising cybercrimes, the state police have decided to set up cyber units at all local police stations . Police chief Loknath Behera on Saturday issued an order allowing police personnel at local stations to register FIRs on cyber complaints and conduct probes.Henceforth, all cyber-related complaints reported at stations would not be transferred to the only cyber police station in the state or the district cyber cells. Once the system is put in place, Kerala would become the first state in the country to have local police stations equipped with expertise to conduct probes into cybercrimes.Presently, there is only one cyber police station in the state. These officers would be picked from among the members of the cybercrime investigation cell.They would assist the station house officers in conducting the probes as per the provisions of the IT Act.

The station house officer at each police station would head investigations into those cases.In a statement issued here, Behera said two cops trained to handle cyber-related complaints would be posted at each station. These officers would be picked from among the members of the cybercrime investigation cell.They would assist the station house officers in conducting the probes as per the provisions of the IT Act. Once the system is put in place, Kerala would become the first state in the country to have local police stations equipped with expertise to conduct probes into cybercrimes.Presently, there is only one cyber police station in the state. Plans are underway to set up two more. The cyber complaints reported in the state are probed by either the cyber police station or district cyber cells. The order of the police chief also says that inspector generals (IGs) of corresponding ranges can handover complex cases to the cyber police station.The DGP further says in his order that the service of the officers with the cybercrime investigation cell at the police stations could be used for collection of digital evidence for other cases as well. However, they could not be used for other duties or be transferred without the knowledge of the IG concerned.IG ( Thiruvananthapuram ) Manoj Abraham has been entrusted with the task of providing periodic training to the members of the cybercrime investigation cell.Besides the cyber unit, the local police stations would also get the service of the officer under telecommunications wing for tech-related assistance.
