She is also the school topper because in no other stream has any student scored 99%. Nanda S. secured 100 marks in one subject and 99 in three, but only 90 in English Core. Once the photocopy came in, she conferred with her school subject teacher in detail and decided that though it was English, a language paper, she stood to gain more marks. more-in In a bonus of sorts for a Class 12 Humanities student of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), Pattom, an increase in marks post-revaluation saw her top her school and come second in the State in the Humanities stream in the CBSE Class XII examinations this year. Nanda S. secured 100 marks in one subject and 99 in three, but only 90 in English Core. A disappointed Nanda applied for a recount of the marks. When that didn’t help, she applied for a photocopy of the answer script. Once the photocopy came in, she conferred with her school subject teacher in detail and decided that though it was English, a language paper, she stood to gain more marks. Her teachers too backed her. “For language papers, the board specifies that even if the answer does not stick to the key but is relevant, marks should be awarded,” she says. Nanda challenged the marks awarded to her in nine questions. The questions were re-evaluated and in a pleasant surprise, she gained eight more marks, taking her total to 495 out of 500, just one mark behind the State topper in Humanities, and her percentage to 99. Daughter of G.P. Sajith Babu, regional director of the NSS Regional Directorate, and Viji R. Nair, a homemaker, Nanda says she had expected an increase in marks but not such a significant change. “I’m very happy and humbled that the blessings of my parents, teachers, and Almighty have borne fruit.” With this, she has also topped the Ernakulam region of KVS and is ranked fifth in the country. Nanda is also elated that she has set a school record in Humanities. She is also the school topper because in no other stream has any student scored 99%. Nanda has enrolled for the undergraduate course in Political Science at University College.
