Thiruvananthapuram: Seven months after the civic body finalized the proposal to supply non-recyclable solid waste to cement kilns for producing refuse-derived fuel, the health wing is set to invite tenders. This would come handy while finalizing tenders for the project, the official said. The model is successfully followed at Madukkarai town in Coimbatore, according to CPCB. Co-processing refers to the use of waste materials in industrial processes as alternative fuels or raw material (AFR) to recover energy and material from them. The city corporation had presented the model before state government and received a green signal, the officials said. Co-processing is regarded as an environmental-friendly and sustainable method of waste disposal as compared to landfilling and incineration, because of reduced emissions and no residue after the treatment.

Thiruvananthapuram: Seven months after the civic body finalized the proposal to supply non-recyclable solid waste to cement kilns for producing refuse-derived fuel, the health wing is set to invite tenders. Two firms in the cement industry had earlier expressed interest in the project. The city corporation has been tapping the possibilities of supply of alternative fuel to cement industry to deal with soaring quantity of non-recyclable plastic, used mattresses and other kinds of solid waste. The health standing committee has been unable to proceed with the plan following which mayor V K Prasanth has directly sought the file and directed the health wing to take the project forward. The civic body has mooted the project riding on the guidelines issued by the central pollution control board on co-processing of plastic waste in cement kilns. Co-processing is regarded as an environmental-friendly and sustainable method of waste disposal as compared to landfilling and incineration, because of reduced emissions and no residue after the treatment. Co-processing refers to the use of waste materials in industrial processes as alternative fuels or raw material (AFR) to recover energy and material from them. Due to the high temperature in the cement kiln, different types of wastes can be effectively disposed of without harmful emissions.A corporation official said that state pollution control board had sent a list of cement manufacturers with facilities for co-processing. This would come handy while finalizing tenders for the project, the official said. The model is successfully followed at Madukkarai town in Coimbatore, according to CPCB. In a cement kiln in the town, the non-recyclable plastics and other materials which are called as the non-recyclable segregated combustible fraction (SCF) get co-processed as AFR to reduce coal consumption and it has also reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The city corporation had presented the model before state government and received a green signal, the officials said.
