Kerala floods: 24,000 in Kozhikode relief camps

The district administration has opened 267 relief camps in four taluks.According to official figures 6,950 families were moved to relief camps due to flooding and landslides. KOZHIKODE: Around 24,000 people have been shifted to relief camps in the district. KSRTC buses are carrying out service from Kozhikode to Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta in Wayanad through Thamarassery Ghat and Kuttiady Ghat. The ministers directed the officials to shift people living in floodthreat areas to relief camps.Wellbeing of the weaker sections staying at relief camps should be prioritised, said the ministers.Meanwhile, KSEB authorities have lowered the shutters of Kakkayam Dam from 350 cm to 250 cm. Vehicles from Kozhikode have also started moving till Edappal in Malappuram .

Over five thousand persons have shifted to their relatives’ houses.“Rain has subsided and the district will return to normalcy if the rain stops,” said K Ramla , deputy collector disaster management. The city witnessed only mild showers on Friday and water-level in low-lying areas have come down, she added.According to initial estimates the total losses suffered in the rain havoc has been estimated at more than Rs 500 crore.At present rescue and rehabilitation activities are the priority, said Ramla.Ministers T P Ramakrishnan and A K Saseendran reviewed the situations in the district on Thursday. The ministers directed the officials to shift people living in floodthreat areas to relief camps.Wellbeing of the weaker sections staying at relief camps should be prioritised, said the ministers.Meanwhile, KSEB authorities have lowered the shutters of Kakkayam Dam from 350 cm to 250 cm. The flow of water to Kuttiady river and other canals and nearby areas will be reduced. “Rain in the catchment area of the dam has reduced and shutters will not be opened if the rain subsides,” said KSEB officials.Connectivity with neighbouring districts has also improved with the water level receding at several places. KSRTC buses are carrying out service from Kozhikode to Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta in Wayanad through Thamarassery Ghat and Kuttiady Ghat. Vehicles from Kozhikode have also started moving till Edappal in Malappuram . “We will resume KSRTC service to southern districts, once the water level recedes,” said Joshy John, KSRTC official.However, the movement of vehicles to southern districts and to Malappuram has been hit as flooding continues at different parts of Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam and other districts.
