Local bodies bank on NREGA for eco-friendly initiatives

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Local bodies in the district are riding on employment guarantee scheme to execute environment conservation projects and housing schemes. Andoorkonam panchayat has created 25,239 man days as part of rural employment guarantee scheme during the present fiscal. Seven houses are also being constructed under employment guarantee scheme. 19 rain water harvesting units and 18 farm ponds were made as part of the guarantee scheme. The panchayat has undertaken a scheme by which it plans to have 500 rain water reservoirs per ward in 23 wards.1140 labourers worked for 10,233 man-days to make rain water reservoirs.

Andoorkonam panchayat has created 25,239 man days as part of rural employment guarantee scheme during the present fiscal. A total of 1521 employees became part of the works which included farm pond, rain water harvesting pits and maintaining plant nurseries.38,000 tree saplings were produced from 19 nurseries. This was planted in 13 wards of panchayat. More number of saplings are being produced in Anathazchira in Vellor ward. 19 rain water harvesting units and 18 farm ponds were made as part of the guarantee scheme. Seven houses are also being constructed under employment guarantee scheme. Toilets, anganwadis are also part of the plan.Kadinamkulam panchayat made over 10,000 rain water harvesting pits during this fiscal under national rural employment guarantee scheme. The panchayat has undertaken a scheme by which it plans to have 500 rain water reservoirs per ward in 23 wards.1140 labourers worked for 10,233 man-days to make rain water reservoirs. The reservoirs measure 1 metre wide and 1 metre length and 1 metre depth. A layer of coconut leaf and shell is laid at 20cm height at the bottom of the pit to facilitate percolation of water. The rain water pits are being made in plots measuring above 5 cents. In plots measuring upto 10 cents, one pit will be made and in plots measuring above 10 cents, 2 pits will be made. An amount of Rs 25.66 lakhs has been spent for the project.
