Weavers Village will be holding a fundraising programme in aid of the weavers in Chendamangalam, whose source of livelihood is in tatters as the recent flood destroyed their weaving units and washed away most of their stock and raw materials. Says Sobha Vishwanath, proprietor of the boutique: “The looms are the sole source of livelihood for the weavers. They need new looms to get back on their feet.” Sobha will be launching Bhoomika, dolls made out of used fabric on September 22. The doll, designed by artiste Deepak Shivarajan, stands as a symbol of support to the weavers of Chendamangalam. The launch is followed by a music performance by P S Baneerjee. Baneerjee will be rendering folk songs on rain and Nature. The fundraiser also will showcase Rajeev Peethambaran’s line of sustainable clothing, Anu Cheran’s handmade pottery, jewellery and home decor under the brand name The Little Goldfish, a hand-picked collection by Maanas Salim’s Niram Neela, and a calligraphy exhibition by Prajwal Xavier on September 22 and 23. According to Rajeev, his collection in earthen colours, has cotton and handloom attires with minimalistic designs. “Some of the outfits have Bhutani detailing on them,” he says. While his line is mostly devoted to Western wear, his designer sarees will also be on display.
