‘Alleppey’ to the aid of schools

After lending a helping hand to flood-hit dairy farmers, the social media campaign ‘I am for Alleppey’ has come to the aid of flood-ravaged schools in the district. The ‘I am for Alleppey’ campaign was launched in September to help rebuild the flood-hit district. According to officials, 248 dairy farmers lost their cattle and sustained huge losses in the devastating floods of August in Kuttanad. The programme aims at distributing cows to around 30 farmers by the end of this month and cattle to all dairy farmers in two months.

The computer lab of EDLP School, Pallathuruthy, which was damaged in floods, has been renovated using ?1. 75 lakh collected through the campaign. The fund was provided by the Telangana Recognised School Management Association. Officials said that five new computers and furniture had been handed over to the school. The renovated lab was inaugurated jointly by municipal chairman Thomas Joseph and Subcollector Krishna Teja recently. As part of the initiative, two farmers from the region have been given two high-breed cattle. According to officials, 248 dairy farmers lost their cattle and sustained huge losses in the devastating floods of August in Kuttanad. The programme aims at distributing cows to around 30 farmers by the end of this month and cattle to all dairy farmers in two months. The initiative has received good response with people expressing their willingness to donate cattle. Officials said that the beneficiaries of the programme had been identified by government departments and each beneficiary would get one cattle each. The ‘I am for Alleppey’ campaign was launched in September to help rebuild the flood-hit district. Several people had joined the effort by donating money for rebuilding damaged hospitals, anganwadis and other public institutions in the district. Actors adopt FHC Among the first to support the campaign are actor Rajeev Kanakala and his wife Suma Kanakala, who adopted a flood-ravaged Family Health Centre (FHC) at Kunnumma. They have handed over ?8 lakh to the Alappuzha district administration. The pictures of damaged buildings along with the estimate prepared for rebuilding or carrying out maintenance are posted on the Facebook page of ‘I am for Alleppey.’ Those who want to be part of the initiative can visit the Facebook page and register.
