Increasing the number of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for surveillance of the whole city and setting up of a command control centre are part of the initiatives planned by the local body. On Saturday, the city Corporation Mayor V.K.Prasanth and Smart City CEO P.Balakiran held a discussion with the State Police Chief Loknath Behera and top police officials on how the project has to be implemented. Not covered “Currently, there are several areas in the city which are not covered under CCTV surveillance. The Police currently has 226 CCTV cameras in various parts of the city. Under the Smart City project, we plan to put up 750 more such cameras. The SPC asked us whether we can increase this number further. We are also planning smart poles at certain places, which would have street lights and CCTV cameras,” said the Mayor. Another major plan is to set up a command control centre, to monitor all the data gathered from the ground. This will be the central point for all the CCTV data, information on Smart metering systems , information kiosks and other similar things. “The initial plan was to set this up at the Corporation office. But, it requires a building which has high ceilings, to accommodate the video walls and the related control units. The discussion with the police officials was on how data exchange will happen between the command control centre and the police control room. Inspector General of Police (Thiruvananthapuram Range) Manoj Abraham and Inspector General of Police (Administration) have been entrusted with the responsibility to work out the details of this,” said the Mayor. Funds of ?153 crore have been set aside for all these activities together. DPR soon The Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared soon, sources said.
