Centre denies permission for foreign trips of 16 ministers

Earlier in the day, the chief minister expressed hope that the Centre would give nod for the foreign visit of his cabinet colleagues. "What turned out to be a setback for the state was the decision to send 16 ministers and CM together. The application for the foreign trips of state ministers were given to the Union home ministry and that of the chief minister was sent to the Prime Minister's office.The state government had planned the visit of 16 ministers other than the chief minister to 26 different countries starting from Wednesday to October 21.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a severe setback to the state government, which is exploring all options for mobilizing funds to rebuild Kerala, the Centre has denied permission for the foreign trip of state ministers, except the chief minister.According to sources in New Delhi, the communique in this regard has been sent to the chief minister by the Union home ministry. The application for the foreign trips of state ministers were given to the Union home ministry and that of the chief minister was sent to the Prime Minister's office.The state government had planned the visit of 16 ministers other than the chief minister to 26 different countries starting from Wednesday to October 21."What turned out to be a setback for the state was the decision to send 16 ministers and CM together. All of them going to different countries and seeking aid for rebuilding Kerala would only dent the image and pride of the country," said a source in New Delhi.Meanwhile, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan is going ahead with the plan for the trip and will leave for the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the chief minister expressed hope that the Centre would give nod for the foreign visit of his cabinet colleagues."We are still hopeful that the Centre would give the permission for the foreign trips of the ministers. I had communicated this to the Prime Minister when I met him in New Delhi and also about the purpose of the visit. He had reacted positively to this," said Vijayan after the cabinet meeting."PM Modi had even recollected the contributions made by the Gujarati community world over when the state was devastated with the earthquake. He was positive about the help getting from the people of our state who are settled abroad," he said.The chief minister will be visiting Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, Dubai on Friday and Sharjah on Saturday.
