Thiruvananthapuram: Of the 13-day session of the assembly , the proceedings were disrupted 10 days. If it was the opposition that disrupted the business of the House in the name of Sabarimala for nine days, on the final day of the session it was disrupted by the treasury benches. This session witnessed continuous disruption in the name of Sabariamala. However, the situation turned worse when the chief minister was not ready to have a discussion with the opposition to put an end to the dharna by three UDF MLAs in the assembly.“I have been the member of the House for almost five decades. No dharna in the House has extended to 11 days like this. Every dharna by the opposition parties in the assembly was settled without any delay,” said veteran MLA and Kerala Congress leader K M Mani.Even the speaker turned helpless as the dharna affected the functioning of the House badly. “Both the government and the opposition were adamant on their stand. Hence a consensus was elusive and I could do nothing,” said speaker P Sreeramakrishnan. But the opposition puts the blame on the adamant and arrogant stand of the chief minister. “The UDF MLAs have been staging dharna for 11 days and despite our repeated request Pinarayi Vijayan was not ready to convene a discussion. The chief minister never gave any respect to the opposition,” said opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala. The session began on November 27 with obituary reference. There was no official business on day one. The very next day several dramatic scenes unfolded with opposition raising the demand for bringing back peace at Sabarimala . The proceedings were first suspended for an hour following unruly scenes and the day’s business was cut short after zero hour as opposition protested denial of leave for an adjournment motion in the Sabarimala issue.Since then the assembly witnessed cutting short of the day’s proceedings following opposition protest and the speaker had to pass several bills without discussion.
