SFI workers held for attacking cops at busy junction

They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.The arrested are: Aromal, 21, of Plamoodu near Pothencode; Akhil, 21, of Kalliyoor; Haider Shanavas , 21, of Vazhimukku near Balaramapuram and Sreejith, 21, of Pachalloor near Thiruvallom. Instead of complying with the police's instructions, Aromal picked up a fight with the traffic policeman and the two other officers. The accused students had attacked a traffic cop and two officers attached to the Special Armed Police (SAP) at the Palayam Martyr's Column junction on Wednesday.The incident occurred when the traffic policeman stopped one of the students, Aromal, from making a U-turn on his bike at the busy junction violating traffic rules. He called up his friends from the University College nearby and around 20 youths rushed to the spot and manhandled the policemen, seriously injuring two of them. Those who were arrested were charged under relevant sections of unlawful assembly, obstructing the duty of public servant, causing serious hurt to public servant and using obscene language.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police on Friday arrested four students of the University College, Palayam, who are also memebrs of the SFI, in connection with assaulting three policemen on duty in public.The students were arrested after they turned up at the Poojapura police station and surrendered themselves. Their arrests were recorded at Cantonment Police Station. The development comes at a time when allegations were raised that the police were delaying the arrest owing to strong political pressure as the accused were affiliated to the student wing of the ruling party.Police said two more youths are yet to be arrested in connection with the case. Though a police team from the Cantonment Police Station reached the spot, they were prevented from taking the accused into custody as the students far outnumbered the cops.The police later identified six of the accused from surveillance camera footages and registered a case against them. Those who were arrested were charged under relevant sections of unlawful assembly, obstructing the duty of public servant, causing serious hurt to public servant and using obscene language.
