Incident-free darshan for transwomen

Police had promised them security following which they reached Pamba Tuesday morning.Meanwhile, the CrPC 144 declared by the Pathanamthitta district collector at Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam will end on Tuesday night. Thiruvananthapuram: The four transwomen who were stopped and sent back midway by police while heading towards Sabarimala for darshan on Sunday climbed the holy steps and offered prayers at the hill shrine on Tuesday morning. They were accompanied by a strong contingent of police from Pamba to Sannidhanam. It is learnt that the police have requested to extend the prohibitory orders till Makaravilakku to ensure an incident-free pilgrimage season.

Thiruvananthapuram: The four transwomen who were stopped and sent back midway by police while heading towards Sabarimala for darshan on Sunday climbed the holy steps and offered prayers at the hill shrine on Tuesday morning. They reached Sannidhanam with police protection.The transwomen, clad in black saris, reached Pamba at 8am from Thiruvanathapuram and trekked the hill shrine accompanied by police team. There was no protest against their entry into the Sannidhanam as the tanthri and Pandalam palace authorities had made it clear that there was nothing wrong in them having darshan at Sabarimala.Ahead of their visit, police had deployed additional force at Pamba, Marakkuttom and Sannidhanam. They were accompanied by a strong contingent of police from Pamba to Sannidhanam. However, there was no protest to the visit of the transwomen and they had a peaceful pilgrimage.They thanked the police and the temple authorities for helping them to have a safe darshan. The four transwomen Anannya, Tripthi, Avantika and Renju were earlier blocked by the police on Sunday at Erumeli when they were on their way to have darshan. Police had reportedly said that they would not allow them to trek the hill shrine wearing sari.Meanwhile, a section of devotees at Sannidhanam raised a complaint that policemen wearing boots and shields were deployed near the sanctum sanctorum, violating tradition, during the visit of transgender members. Senior officers intervened and withdrew the policemen in full uniform from the area soon.The transwomen had met DGP A Hemachandran, a member of the high court-appointed monitoring committee, on Monday seeking support to have darshan. They also met IG Manoj Abraham.
