Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time, a government school for blind/partially sighted students at Vazhuthacaud has sought the public’s support to improve the learning experiences of its pupils.In a press statement, the school has called for public volunteers for converting academic books to audio books for its students.The school has already converted around 60 % of books of Class I-VII to audio books with voluntary support. “Not enough audio books are available for high school and Plus Two students. There is a recording studio within the school campus. Interested people can come between 9am and 5pm on working days and Saturdays. We would like to keep it open even on Sundays provided we have enough staff,” said Abdul Hakkim, school headmaster.The school has already submitted a proposal to the government, requesting financial support for the audio book initiative. “Around 650 hours would be needed to prepare the audio books for high school and Plus Two students. We have submitted a report to the government. The State Institute of Educational Technology has agreed to provide more recording facilities so that three persons could record at a time,” he said.The school is planning to create a list of interested volunteers, to whom the school can pay for their service when government approves the proposal. Already, 10 persons have been enlisted. The school has also plans to convert library books into audio books.In addition to audio books, the school also need volunteers to read out books to a blind teacher who has been volunteering to make braille books for students for the past several years.“Baby Girija has voluntarily agreed to support students by making braille books for them. She utilizes her free time for it. Since she is blind, she need someone to read out to her,” Hakkim said.Interested persons can contact the headmaster: 8547326805
