Venjaramoodu: Both commuters and shopkeepers are facing a tough time because of the frequent traffic snarls in Venjaramoodu town. Many of the shopkeepers and vendors said that the traffic problems are badly affecting their businesses.Jubin T, a shopkeeper said that many customers dread coming all the way to the shops in the East Road circle that leads to the entrance of the KSRTC depot due to the heavy traffic congestion “The traffic congestion in the Venjaramoodu town is not a one-day affair. The issue persists almost on a daily basis as it starts from 6am to 12 noon on working days. The congestion has been taking a toll on our businesses for the past five years. Customers can hardly cross the road to reach our shop,” says Jubin, who runs a footwear shop at East Road, Venjaramoodu from the past 15 years. He expressed the hope that the proposed flyover will ease the pressure of vehicles at the traffic bottlenecks.Jayadev C S, another shopkeeper, said that buses and taxis are the major vehicles creating traffic chaos in the area. “The narrow road is jam-packed with buses and taxis which leave little space for other vehicles and pedestrians. Either the bus stand should be shifted or traffic rules should be implemented strictly. There are many hotels, shops and textiles on the premises of the Venjaramoodu bus stand, besides a number of halls and health clinics. In addition, there are more than 10 restaurants at the junction, and only a few have parking space. With no other option to park their vehicles, motorists leave their vehicles on the road, shrinking the road space to a great extent,” he said.“There is absolute chaos and confusion on the MC Road at the Venjaramoodu Junction as the area lacks a traffic signal. Since vehicles heading from Attingal, Kilimanoor, Nedumangadu, Thiruvananthapuram and KSTRC bus stand pass through the junction, commuters remain stranded in the area for about 40 minutes every working day. The flyover and the ring road will help ease the congestion but till then officials should appoint traffic personnel at the junction,” said Anil Kumar, ward member of Mylayckal.
