Byelection: LDF, UDF share honours, BJP puts up a fight

Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF and the UDF almost retained a status quo in the results of byelections to 30 local body wards announced here on Friday. The LDF has lost four of its five seats to UDF in southern districts where Sabarimala crisis was a major issue. It matched the trend in the byelection results in November, which saw the LDF losing 11 of the 13 seats to which elections were held in southern districts.The LDF and UDF won 15 and 12 seats, respectively whereas BJP candidates emerged runner ups in five wards, mostly in southern districts. Of the five seats that UDF wrested from LDF, four were from Ernakulam and other southern districts.While going to the polls, the seat tally was such that LDF had 17 seats, UDF had 12 and RMP one. The five seats the UDF candidates wrested from the LDF are: Kallikkad (Thiruvananthapuram), Karuvatta (Alappuzha), Neendur (Kottayam), Kottappadi ward 1 (Ernakulam).BPJ candidates finished second in Ranni (Pathanamthitta), Ottasekharamangalam Plampazhanji ward (Thiruvananthapuram), Chittumala block panchayat (Kollam), Chazhoor (Thrissur) and Kalpathy (Palakkad). LDF candidate retained the Puthusserymala west ward by a margin of 55 votes.In Alappuzha municipality, the UDF member turned rebel candidate and won the seat.In the last byelections to 39 local bodies, results of which were announced on November 30, the LDF and the UDF had won 20 and 11 seats each and the BJP and the SDPI had won two each.
