1000-strong Janamaithri volunteers to assist cops

Thiruvananthapuram: Having successfully prevented major crimes and untoward incidents during the past week, the city police are all set to face the litmus test at the Attukal Pongala . The outer zone, comprising all areas in the city where devotees offer pongala will be under the supervision of deputy commissioner of police (law & order) N Ramesh Kumar. SP K S Vimal will be heading the police action in this zone.

Thiruvananthapuram: Having successfully prevented major crimes and untoward incidents during the past week, the city police are all set to face the litmus test at the Attukal Pongala . Additional forces mobilized to reinforce the troops that were already on duty during the initial days of the festival, took to their posts on Tuesday at sharp 8 am and commenced their duty. “Starting from Tuesday morning, the final shift will last for 36 hours,” said city police commissioner S Surendran.This year, the police have the assistance of a new force, the 1,000-member strong janamaithri volunteers who will be available at the call of the police at an emergency.The total police force is divided into four zones – inner zone, outer zone, traffic zone and emergency zone and each zone will be under the charge an SP. The region comprising Attukal Devi Temple and surrounding premises is marked as the inner zone. SP K S Vimal will be heading the police action in this zone. The outer zone, comprising all areas in the city where devotees offer pongala will be under the supervision of deputy commissioner of police (law & order) N Ramesh Kumar. The cops in charge of traffic zone will manage the vehicular traffic along the roads. Those in the emergency zone are entrusted with the duty of arranging a way for ambulance and vehicles of fire and rescue services in case of an eventuality.A troop of 100 woman commandos are deployed in the inner zone. The quick response team of the police will also be present in the inner zone.The total force includes 25 DSPs, 62 inspectors including 12 women, 545 Sis including 65 women, 1,200 woman cops and 1,800 men will be on duty during the Pongala.
