Petition against BJP’s election campaign video

T’puram/Kottayam: Kottayam-based Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation has petitioned central election commission against BJP using national flag in its campaign video – ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’. The three-minute video was widely circulated on social media platforms on Monday.“The video is a clear violation of model code of conduct. National flag is exhibited six times in the video. EC later decided to display candidate’s image in the voting machine for easy identification by voters. Flag code of India 2002 clearly says that use of national flag for advertisement purposes is an offence,” pointed out Eby J Jose, chairman of Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation in the compliant to EC.According to the complaint, one shot in the video shows the Indian national flag after sunset which is against the norms.

Showing the visuals of air force plane, military tank, and deployment of troops in the Main Bhi Chowkidar campaign was highly inappropriate, the petition said.The foundation had earlier suggested to the EC that the photograph of candidates should be displayed against their name in the EVM so that the practice of namesakes wining the votes of main candidates could be checked. EC later decided to display candidate’s image in the voting machine for easy identification by voters.
