As per the newly released handbook, plastic should be avoided in all kinds of publicity material, including for the boards, banners and flags of political parties. The protocol suggests that cotton clothes and paper should be the primary material for designing publicity materials. It also suggests that natural materials like bamboo, coconut leaves and other similar materials can be used. The protocol also says that digital boards can be used in places where there is permission to do so.The protocol says that the candidates should desist from using plastic bottles for carrying drinking water, especially those who are going on house visits during campaign. Instead, they can carry a steel bottle in their hand, and also maintain a water dispenser inside their vehicle to collect water in the bottles. Even in the decoration of the vehicles, the protocol suggests that cotton cloth and paper should be used instead of any kind of plastic material. The same is applicable for cups, plates and glasses that the candidate and their supporters use. Instead of plastic or thermocol materials, it has been advised to use plates of biodegradable material or steel. The protocol recommends that the candidates should also print a green message in their publicity material, and should also tell the voters about their plans for ensuring pro-environment measures if there are elected. The candidates have been asked to ensure that all the materials that have been used for publicity are collected, segregated and properly disposed. The Haritha Keralam Mission and Suchitwa Mission will give technical support and allay all the doubts with regard to maintaining green protocol in the elections.
