Amit Dutta`s Films a Big Draw

The experimental filmmaker, whose visually-rich movies braid together documentation and imagination, has ten of his films scheduled for screening - all of which are on the must-watch list of most delegates. ‘Ramkhind, a Warli Village’ - his meditative, feature-length documentary on the tribal artists of Warli in Maharashtra, was screened on the inaugural evening. Vijay has incorporated a guided tour of the creative process that defined the aesthetics of experimental cinema in Malayalam by the ace filmmaker.   Poet Anwar Ali makes his debut as filmmaker with his 90-minute documentary on author Attoor Ravi Varma.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Amit Dutta, the filmmaker in focus at the 8th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala, has caught the imagination of the city’s film buffs, if the buzz on Day One is any indicator. The experimental filmmaker, whose visually-rich movies braid together documentation and imagination, has ten of his films scheduled for screening - all of which are on the must-watch list of most delegates. ‘Ramkhind, a Warli Village’ - his meditative, feature-length documentary on the tribal artists of Warli in Maharashtra, was screened on the inaugural evening.

‘Field Trip’, Nainsukh’, ‘Chitrasala’, and ‘Even Red Can Be Sad’ will be shown at Sree theatre on Saturday. Movies that have generated interest among the audience include Vipin Vijay’s documentary on master director Adoor Gopalakrishnan; Rajesh James’s ‘Zebra Lines’; Vidhu Vincent’s ‘Caste and Cleanliness - Vritiyude Jathi’ and the like.  ‘Feet Upon the Ground’, the documentary on Adoor, presents the filmmaker in spaces related to his works.

Vijay has incorporated a guided tour of the creative process that defined the aesthetics of experimental cinema in Malayalam by the ace filmmaker. Rajesh James has woven his film around the real-life incident where a traffic warden, Padmini, was attacked by a man while on duty. Her presence at the festival venue attracted attention and the film had a fairly good audience.

  Poet Anwar Ali makes his debut as filmmaker with his 90-minute documentary on author Attoor Ravi Varma. The film includes audio recordings and presentations of Attoor poems. Competition films include a wide variety of movies that cover ethno-anthropological subjects to cultural lineages and life stories.

The international section has movies from Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Lithuania, USA, Iran, Egypt, China and other countries. .
