The Kerala state unit of the BJP on Thursday announced that `Metroman` E. Sreedharan will join the party ahead of the Kerala Assembly election.

The party-state president, K Surendran while addressing a press conference in Kasargod, said that Sreedharan, who is credited with changing the face of the public transport system in the country, will join the BJP when the party Vijay Yatra` will reach Sreedharan’s home district Malappuram. The state-wide yatra led by Surendran will commence on February 21 from Kasargod.

He has expressed his willingness to work with the BJP, Surendran told reporters here. He further added that the party desires that the 88-year-old revered engineer contests the upcoming state assembly polls.

“I have been living in Kerala for the past 10 years. I have seen both the UDF and the LDF rule. I feel that these rules have not brought any tangible progress to the state. Lot of things are possible in terms of industrialisation and employment opportunities for people. Not even one industry in the state in the last 20 years,” he said, adding that prospective of development is better for BJP in the state because the party is also the ruling the central government.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s state unit hopes that an iconic figure like Sreedharan joining the party will benefit them electorally in the upcoming state legislative assembly elections.

BJP state general secretary M T Ramesh said, “The BJP is raising the motto of development and a new Kerala. For the people of Kerala, Sreedharan is like an ambassador for development. The youth and new voters, especially in the city areas, will be supporting him. This will benefit us electorally.”

The `Metro Man` had played a pivotal role in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation as well as the Kochi Metro project that was the first metro project taken up in the southern state of India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
